Calling Johnny McDaid my ‘partner’ is ‘difficult’

Courteney Cox knows how she and boyfriend Johnny McDaid refer to each other can be confusing for other people.

“He’s my partner. That’s what he calls it — ‘partner’ — and I’m from Alabama so you don’t really say ‘partner’ unless you’re in the same sex,” Cox explained on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Monday night. “He’s my guy. He’s my one, so ‘partner’ is difficult for me.”

The “Friends” alum, 54, and the Snow Patrol musician, 42, got engaged in 2014 before splitting up and eventually getting back together. Although the couple has been better than ever since reuniting—McDaid even got Cox’s initials tattooed on his wrist—Cox called their temporary split “brutal.”

“I didn’t know how to regard love the way he does,” she added. “And it definitely made a lot of mistakes that I see, whether it’s co-dependency or people-pleasing. I didn’t know how to bring it in. It was always external. I definitely have learned a lot, and no matter what, I will be a better person from that breakup, even though it was so brutal.”

Prior to McDaid, Cox was married to “Scream” co-star David Arquette, with whom she shares one daughter named Coco.
