Chris Pratt reacts to Ellen Page calling Hillsong ‘anti-LGBTQ’

Chris Pratt defended his church after Ellen Page criticized it for being “anti-LGBTQ.”

The “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor, 39, took to his Instagram Story to post a lengthy statement about megachurch Hillsong, which includes celebrity attendees such as Justin and Hailey Bieber, Selena Gomez and more.

“It has recently been suggested that i belong to a church which ‘hates a certain group of people’ and is ‘infamously anti-LGBTQ.’ Nothing could be further from the truth,” Pratt wrote. “I go to a church that opens their doors to absolutely everyone.”

Pratt referenced his divorce from Anna Faris as an example of just how accepting his church is.

“Despite what the Bible says about divorce my church community was there for me every step of the way, never judging, just gracefully accompanying me on my walk,” he continued. “They helped me tremendously offering love and support. It is what I have seen them do for others on countless occasions regardless of sexual orientation, race or gender.”

Page recalled in a tweet last Thursday how Hillsong founder Brian Houston previously declared in a blog post: “We do not affirm a gay lifestyle.” He added that gay men and women are banned from holding positions of leadership in the church. Page, who married Emma Portner last year and serves as an LGBTQ advocate, explained why she felt it was important to speak out about Hillsong.

“If you are a famous actor and you belong to an organization that hates a certain group of people, don’t be surprised if someone simply wonders why it’s not addressed,” she wrote. “Being anti LGBTQ is wrong, there aren’t two sides. The damage it causes is severe. Full stop. Sending love to all.”

Pratt also maintained that what the church may value may not line up with his beliefs.

“My faith is important to me but no church defines me or my life, and I am not a spokesman for any church or any group of people,” Pratt wrote. “My values define who I am.”
