Accepting the Golden Globe on Sunday evening for best actor in the film “Vice,” Bale thanked “Satan for giving me inspiration on how to play this role.”
Liz Cheney, a Republican from Wyoming, then tweeted her reaction to Bale’s comments.
“Satan probably inspired him to do this, too. Christian Bale arrested for ‘assault on mother and sister,’” she said in her posting, linking to a story in The Independent.
But the Church of Satan said the devil is in the details.
“To us, Satan is a symbol of pride, liberty and individualism, and it serves as an external metaphorical projection of our highest personal potential,” the church posted on its Twitter page. “As Mr. Bale’s own talent and skill won him the award, this is fitting. Hail Christian! Hail Satan!”
In another tweet, the church said “Bale’s Dark Knight era Batman is the best Batman.”
The Independent newspaper report from July 2008 said Bale’s mother, Jenny, and sister, Sharon, told police in London that he assaulted them at his suite in The Dorchester hotel.
Prosecutors dropped charges against him the next month, saying they found “insufficient evidence” to prosecute the case.
