Inside Vanity Fairy’s 2019 Oscars party

After Glenn Close‘s shocking loss at the Oscars, the intrepid actress kicked up her heels at Vanity Fair‘s after-party, dancing past midnight.

At the starry bash, Amy Adams was the first star to cut loose in a backroom with a dancefloor, and her moves were so hot, a dance circle opened up as one star-after-another took center stage.

Barbra Streisand headed for the hills, exiting with husband James Brolin. But icon Close — who missed winning an Oscar for the seventh time earlier in the evening — jumped in to dance, having changed into a glittering jumpsuit. (Close wore a gold dress that weighed 42 pounds to the ceremony, and one insider at the VF party joked that Close had been such a shoo-in for the Best Actress award, “She even dressed as an Oscar.”)

At the after-party Close danced so wildly, that she even wiped out at one point — but she gracefully recovered. “She played it off and lay down on the ground like a starfish,” said a guest. She then got up and adorably danced cheek-to-cheek with Marisa Tomei.

In the circle of celebrity onlookers was Jennifer Hudson — who told us she didn’t dare head into the dance-off. “All I’ve got is my shoulder and this,” she said as she executed a cool little move snapping her finger. Nominee Richard E. Grant was gobsmacked, telling us he’d never seen a dance-off before and that he’d never even been to an awards show before — until he was nominated for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (His co-star Melissa McCarthy hilariously arrived at the VF party with her husband Ben Falcone in matching comfy Adidas track suits.) Judd Apatow was also enjoying the dancing display, as off to the side, “Aquaman” Jason Momoa boogied in his pink tux with wife Lisa Bonet when Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing” came on. James McAvoy also showed off some moves.

Meantime on the red carpet out front, a late-arriving Lady Gaga paused to tenderly kissed her Oscar. “Quipped one onlooker, “Will anyone ever kiss me the way that Lady Gaga kisses that Oscar?”

After a scathing New York Times piece that declared the VF party had lost its mojo, celebrity guests roundly gave the fete high marks as the endless stars streaming in also included Kendall and Caitlyn Jenner, Elton John, Taylor Swift, Lupita Nyong’o, Natalie Portman, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Tiffany Haddish, and power players such as J.J. Abrams and Ron Meyer. Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos was spotted at the party chowing on a late-night In-N-Out burger — without girlfriend Lauren Sanchez. Though Sanchez’s ex, Patrick Whitesell was also there.

Bill Maher was overheard quipping, “Three people have offered me weed — so it’s a good party.” (Pot is of course legal in California.)

The scene also still made for some surreal celebrity pairings: “Captain America” Chris Evans was seen in deep conversation with Marilyn Manson, as Beck hugged Jeff Goldblum. Natasha Lyonne hung with Chloë Sevigny, who plays her mother in the hip Netflix series “Russian Doll,” as the members of Haim all texted.

Priyanka Chopra was seen enthusiastically greeting editor Radhika Jones when the “Quantico” star arrived to the dance floor with new husband Nick Jonas.

By the end of the night, Maya Rudolph was getting into a car with a burger in hand. Also attending were her hilarious Oscars non-co-hosts who opened the show, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

(One celebrity guest confided in us at the party: “I missed having a host. I missed someone coming back out in a new outfit and doing a bit.”)

Besides the night’s other hot after-parties hosted by Madonna and Jay-Z on Sunday night, there was a rumor going around that one winner was having a secret party with some other nominees.

VF also hosted its annual VIP viewing dinner during the Oscar before the after-party got going.
