The last 17 months have been difficult for Kathy Griffin as she’s been caring for her her ailing mother, Maggie.
Maggie, 98, is battling dementia — and now only knows Kathy’s name and the phrase “I love you.”
Kathy, 58, took to Twitter on Thursday to detail her feelings and pay tribute to her mother.
“She has rapidly fallen into the throes of dementia,” Kathy said. “This is never easy for any child, I know this is a reality that millions of people deal with every year. But when it comes to my mom this is particularly hard because her sharp mind was everything.”
The comedian added her mother maintained her sharp mind until the past couple of months.
“I want to assure you all that she is not in pain and she is getting the best 24-hour care,” she added. “In terms of how she is now, at this point she only knows my name and I love you.”
The reality star also went on to ask fans to share any memories they have of Maggie and to send any photos they may have taken together.
“What I am most proud of when I comes to ‘My Life On The D’ List is that show gave me the opportunity to show the world how naturally funny my parents were,” she added. “When people tell me they feel like they know my mom, I always respond ‘you do!’ She never put on a show, she was the show.”
