Taraji P. Henson on “The Best of Enemies,” her new film: “I play Ann Atwater, a real-life ’70s powerhouse civil-rights leader in North Carolina. This voice for a voiceless people fought the war on poverty. Fought slumlords for her family. Learned the law. And helped others around her.

“I understood her drive and passion. I believe in taking up for those who need it. I always fought for people who were bullied.

“It was lots of research to get her tone and rhythm. She was earthy. She had bravado. She wouldn’t back down to these men. Our director sent me a tape of her saying she was honored I was going to play her and that relieved some of the pressure for me. I just wish she was alive to see it. To ask her how I did.”

Sam Rockwell stars as the KKK leader in this civil-rights rumble, which hits theaters April 5.

Crooks, all

Live longer than Methuselah, and we still might miss anyone angelic. Former chiefs of state have had their ways. Don’t like our president? Don’t vote for him. That’s the glory of our wondrous country. Pick someone else. Like that senator from the wigwam. Or Drooly Sanders. Truth is that crop is finished. Over. The candidate’s Biden. Running matron Kamala Harris. Good ol’ Joe, too aged to run around shaking hands and stepping in it as usual, will do no retail vote-getting. He’ll go heavy on TV and ads. And surprise! Obama, who arrived earning a buck and a quarter and left buying an $8.1 million house, will beat the bushes for him. Enough of the world hates us and our government. Please, let our own people — even those who might shield their own stories — stop this hate.

Race-car doc’s upon us

Actor Patrick Dempsey’s a racing driver. Got a sports car. Got a vintage car collection. Also a Porsche. Also a Mazda. Also he’s raced at Le Mans. Also, although his first hotshot screen time was with Beverly D’Angelo at age 21, and he’s been on “Grey’s Anatomy,” who knows how he’s earned enough to have all these wheels? Also, being a race team owner, he has to fund-raise to keep his car on the track.

But now — ta-da! — he produced the just-released hour-and- 20-minute documentary “Hurley.”

He says: “Race-car enthusiasts are macho. In the ’70s and ’80s the great driver Hurley Haywood posed with gorgeous gals, Penthouse models, sexy actresses. The problem being, Hurley Haywood didn’t drive for that team.”

Hurley: “Not many race-car drivers come out to say they’re gay.”

Dempsey: “This sort of thing just wasn’t talked about back then. Fans want to know the personal life of their favorites. Had Hurley — who’s won multiple races — come out in the 1970s, his career would have been over. After finding a sport that was 100 percent machismo, he proved all of that all wrong.”

One guy: “Commentators and reporters need to end this anger, muckraking, smearing, digging up lies and preventing a chief of state from having time to actually run a country.”

Second guy: “Yeah? Lotsa luck. There goes our 6 o’clock news.”

Only in New York, kids, only in New York.
